Yin Yoga has been around for a long time, and suddenly within the last 12 months in Australia it's began to boom! Don't get me wrong, that's not a bad thing. I've thought for a long time that we should be 'balancing' out our Yoga practice a little more ... especially those of us that practice Power Vinyasa. So it seems I misunderstood the whole 'Yin' approach. I thought Yin Yoga would be gentle and restorative when in fact it can be a damn hard class! Just because it's a slower approach where the students are asked to hold the poses for longer, doesn't necessarily mean it's a class for the old, stiff and injured. Yin Yoga is the chosen practice for many many advanced superfit Yogis. Leonie Lockwood (Breathe Wellbeing, Melbourne) wrote this description. Yin Yoga is a slower paced therapeutic approach to Hatha Yoga with poses held for longer periods (3-8 minutes). Often deceptively seen as a simple practice, Yin Yoga goes deeper than heating the body and stretching or contracting the muscular tissues that you may experience in a faster 'yang' style class (which is mostly what we practice in the west .. like vinyasa etc). A Yin Yoga practice will encourage you to entirely relax the muscles rather than engage them. The Yin Yoga practice is the yoga for the joints, bones, ligaments and fascia. In addition to the physical challenges of holding the poses, the classes present a strong mental challenge until a mindful state of 'being present' can be cultivated. You can catch Leonie Lockwood teaching Yin Yoga at Breathe Wellbeing every Tuesday at 1.15pm.

Interesting Yin yoga. I did a yoga class in Johor Bahru, Malaysia last week that fits this description. Conducted mostly in Chinese. Really good and the reviewer describes really exerting.
